A while back, I wrote a blog post listing my sixteen favorite space-horror movies. It got me thinking about the movies that I watch the most often and the reasons why I watch them. This evening, when finishing off a bourbon and watching one of the movies on this list, I thought to write this blog post before going to bed… putting my thoughts on the subject to electronic paper before drifting off to sleep. So here are my top five favorite movies, in no particular order…

  1. Lost in Translation (2003)
  2. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
  3. The Razor’s Edge (1984)
  4. The Thing (1982)
  5. Knight of Cups (2015)

These are my top five; the movies that I watch over and over. In the case of The Razor’s Edge, I also read the novel every year as well and have done so since I was in high school. High school was a very long time ago, so I’ve read it many times over the years. I’ve also read and re-read the novella upon which The Thing is based… Who Goes There?

I don’t know what it means that I watch these particular movies so often. Maybe I see a little of myself in them or maybe I wish that I was a character living in their fictional reality? I dunno. I just know that I love these movies.

Leaving off, I will let you know that Blade Runner 2049 eclipsed Sunshine (2007).  And Knight of Cups replaced The Quiet Man (1952). The Quiet Man had been in the top five since high school, along with The Razor’s Edge. I’m sure one or two of them will drop out as new ones are released and I become enthralled the storytelling of the new cinema. But for now, these are the movies I call favorites.
